Don Fox on the inspiration for Following Darkness:
“A number of years ago, I came across a series of old photos of Hitler and the Third Reich during World War II. One photo in particular caught my interest as it showed Hitler shaking hands with the Hitler Youth outside his underground bunker.

The photo was taken near the new Reich Chancellery on April 20, 1945, the day of Hitler’s birthday and ten days before his death. This riveting image documented a ceremony that was being held to hand out the Iron Cross Medal to brave Hitler Youth.
What intrigued me about the shot was the startling disconnect between Hitler, the Hitler Youth, and what was going on around them -- which of course was the total collapse of the Third Reich.
With the Soviets and Allies closing in on Berlin there was precious little time left before the Nazis and their empire were destroyed. Yet amid the intense chaos of the final days of the war, Hitler appears happy in the photos, shaking hands with these courageous, if mislead boys. The boys themselves must have been mystified by the strange ceremony with their Fuhrer.
Deeply impressed by the photos and the compelling story behind them, I began to write the film treatment for Following Darkness.”
